How to hyperlink a digital planner (tabs, months and days)

A practical guide to hyperlinking a digital planner PDF for GoodNotes and Notability: link types, a page map, tabs, calendar cells, testing, and how to speed it up.

A hyperlinked digital planner is a PDF where tapping a tab, a month or a calendar day jumps to the right page. Buyers expect it, and it is the part sellers spend the most hours on. This guide covers how the links work, how to plan them, and how to add them without breaking anything.

How planner links actually work

GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, Xodo and most PDF readers follow standard PDF link annotations: an invisible rectangle on a page with a destination. For a planner you want internal links ("go to page 37"), not web links. A tab that was accidentally made as a URL opens a browser instead of turning the page.

Apps ignore JavaScript and form-based navigation, so keep it to plain page links. Also tell buyers that in GoodNotes a tap with the pen selected draws instead of following the link; they need to switch to read-only mode or select the hand/view tool.

Step 1: Write a page map before you link anything

List every page and its number: cover, year overview, 12 month pages, weekly pages, daily pages, notes. A dated daily planner for one year is usually 400+ pages. Every later step depends on the map, so do it in a spreadsheet:

  • Page type (month, week, day, notes)
  • The date it represents
  • Which tabs appear on it (they usually appear on every page)

Step 2: Link the tabs that repeat on every page

Side tabs (Jan to Dec, Index, Notes) appear on every page and point to the same targets everywhere. In Canva and Keynote you can design the tab strip once and link it on a master or a duplicated page, then duplicate. Check that duplicating keeps the link targets, and re-check after you insert or delete pages, because page-number links do not move with the content.

Step 3: Link the calendar cells

This is where most hours go. Each month page has 28 to 31 day cells that each point to a different daily page, and the first cell shifts with the weekday. Work month by month from your page map, and do the first and last day of each month first, since those are where off-by-one errors show up. A Sunday-start version needs its own set of cell targets.

Step 4: Add navigation links

Previous/next buttons, "back to month", and "back to week" links make a planner feel finished. Link December 31 to the notes or year page, not to a page that does not exist.

Step 5: Export and test on a real tablet

  1. Export as PDF with links enabled (in Canva, a standard PDF download keeps links; flattening or some compressors strip them).
  2. Run a link check for broken destinations. Folory's free link checker does this in the browser without uploading the file.
  3. Import into GoodNotes and Notability. Tap every tab from three random pages, the first and last day of each month, and prev/next around New Year.

Faster: date and link it automatically

Linking by hand is fine for a 12-page undated planner. For a dated year it is days of clicking, and it repeats every year. Tools that automate it let you keep your own design and draw the hotspots once. That is what Folory does: upload the undated PDF you exported from Canva, Keynote or Procreate, tag page types, draw tabs and the calendar grid once, and export a linked, dated year in your browser.
